In Minecraft, potions are drank and splash potions are thrown. When you drink a potion, it will give you special effects that can either help you or be harmful. Let’s explore how to use a potion.
Choose a Potion
In Minecraft, you can drink any one of these potions (some have positive effects and others are harmful).
Steps to Use a Potion
1. Select a Potion
Once you have crafted a potion, select the potion in your hotbar.
In this example, we have selected a Potion of Strength.
2. Drink the Potion
Next, you will will need to use/drink the potion. The game control to use the potion depends on the version of Minecraft:
- For Java Edition (PC/Mac), right click and hold.
- For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap and hold.
- For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press and hold the LT button on the Xbox controller.
- For PS3 and PS4, press and hold the L2 button on the PS controller.
- For Wii U, press and hold the ZL button on the gamepad.
- For Nintendo Switch, press and hold the ZL button on the controller.
- For Windows 10 Edition, right click and hold.
- For Education Edition, right click and hold.
You should now see yourself drinking the potion. After a few seconds, you will stop drinking and the glass bottle will be empty in your hotbar.
3. See the Particle Effects
Now, you should see colored swirls float around you. These are the particle effects from the potion. This means that you have a special ability and the effects of the potion have begun.
The color of the particle effects will be different for each potion effect.
4. Check the Duration of the Potion Effects
The game control to see the special effects and how long they will last depends on the version of Minecraft:
- For Java Edition (PC/Mac), press the E key to open the inventory menu and you will see the current effects.
- For Pocket Edition (PE), you will see buttons for the current effects appear on the right edge of the screen. Just tap on the effect that you wish to view and it will show you the name of the effect and the duration.
- For PS3 and PS4, press the Triangle button on the PS controller to open the inventory menu and see your current effects.
- For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press the Y button on the Xbox controller to open the inventory menu to view your current effects.
- For Windows 10 Edition, press the E key to open the inventory menu and you will see the current effects.
- For Wii U, press the X button to open the inventory menu to see the current effects.
- For Nintendo Switch, press the X button to open the inventory menu to see the current effects.
- For Education Edition, press the E key to open the inventory menu and you will see the current effects.
In this example, we have the power of Strength that will last for another 2 minutes and 52 seconds.
When the effects of the potion wear off, the colored swirls will disappear.
